How do I read my propane tank gauge?

Lift the dome cover on top of your propane tank to find the gauge dial. It shows a percentage from 0–100. At 30% or below, call to schedule a delivery. At 20% or below, call immediately. A full tank reads 80% — not 100% — because tanks are filled to 80% capacity to allow for safe expansion.

Why does a full tank only read 80% on the gauge?

Propane expands when heated. Tanks are filled to a maximum of 80% to leave expansion room and prevent dangerous pressure buildup on hot days. A reading of 80% right after delivery is completely normal.
